Successful
Sewer Rehabilitation Project
In 1997, the City of Cordova contracted with The Cassady Company to upgrade
their wastewater treatment facility.
After a careful review of Cordovas wastewater treatment plant and
sewage collection system, it was decided that in lieu of upgrading the treatment
plant, the infiltration, inflow, and exfiltration should first be handled
in the collection system. To accomplish this goal, a three phase project
was prepared to rehabilitate three areas of the existing collection system.
The City of Cordova sought grant monies through the Alabama Department of
Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) and a project of approximately $650,000
was prepared.
The first step of the project was to clean and video portions of the sewer
system. The video revealed that the system was constructed mainly of vitrified
clay pipe with joints every four to six feet.
In the Cordova area, there has been a lot of subsurface mining and settlement
around the City. This activity was evident in the sags, cracks, and breaks
in the sewer line joints. After a thorough review of the video, the following
rehabilitation methods were considered: Insituform, pipe bursting, slip
lining, and complete replacement. Due to the shallow depth, location of
pipe, and quantity of pipe, the cost to rehabilitate this line favored the
complete replacement of sewer line, manholes, and laterals
within the right-of-way.
The project was successfully completed cutting out approximately 50,000
gallons per day of infiltration and inflow.
Plans are in the works for Phases II and III of this project.
The approach by the City to put off enlarging the treatment plant will buy
them additional time because of the capacity gained from ending the inflow
and infiltration of the system. This project, constructed and completed
within the time schedule and budget, was considered very successful by the
City of Cordova.

Since we last published our newsletter, we have made a few changes. Most
importantly, we have added new personnel. Many of our clients have had the
opportunity to meet our new engineer, Angela Jones, and our draftsman, Brian
Green.

joined our staff in August 1999 and brings with her five years of experience
in the fields of water and wastewater. Brian has significant experience
with AutoCad and is in charge of all drafting operations in the company.
In addition, we recently relocated our office to the City of Tuscaloosa.
